The following is a list of characters from Level-5's video game and anime franchise, ''Yo-Kai Watch''. Where available, names from the English games and North American English dub are on the left, while the original Japanese names are on the right.

:Nate is an 11-year-old boy who is often considered extremely average in all manners, a fact that bothers him. While out in the forest, he happens upon a capsule machine stading under a derelict sacred tree. Purchasing one of the capsules, he frees Whisper and is given the Yo-Kai Watch, allowing him to see and make friends with Yo-Kai, as well as summon them into battle.

:Whisper is the self-appointed, ghostly Yo-Kai butler to Nate after he frees him from a capsule he was imprisoned in. He helps Nate understand the Yo-Kai World and its interactions with the human world. Whisper claims to be very knowledgable about the Yo-Kai, but actually relies heavily on a tablet computer called the to look up information on the . He often dismisses Nate's suspicions that a Yo-Kai is involved with mysterius occurrences in his life, only to be proven wrong almost instantly. Following an incident with the Yo-Kai Watch Type Zero, he is able to help Nate switch between the two different Yo-Kai Watches by putting his arm inside his mouth. He always ends his statements with . In ''Yo-Kai Watch Busters'', he is revealed to be a Slippery Tribe Yo-Kai. In the anime, it is revealed he is secretly a Yo-Kai named , whose belches cause people to claim to know all about things when they actually have no idea.

:Jibanyan is a Charming Tribe Yo-Kai who is the ghost of a cat named , who died after being hit by a truck while crossing an intersection. He has since become a residual haunting and possesses people to make them cross the street without waiting for the signal, all so he can make failed attempt to fight the cars to avenge his death. When Nate believes that Jibanyan is brave for his actions, Jibanyan is surprised and overwhelmed with joy, forming a contract with Nate. He ends up staying at Nate's house, where is often spends his time eating chocolate bars or worshipping his favorite idol group, Next Harmeowny. Jibanyan had initially assumed that his owner, Emi, called him lame for dying, but, after being sent back in time by the Grim Reaper association Din and Gin, he learns that she was actually referring to herself, as Akamaru's death was the result of saving her from getting hit by the truck first.
:Jibanyan can transform into different Yo-Kai under certain circumstances. While undr imfluence of Roughraff, Jibanyan is turned into the bōsōzoku-inspired Baddinyan () who thinks he is doing bad things, but is not that effective in scaring Nate. When he gets a cold, he becomes , turning green and growing cactus-like spikes that shoot out whenever he sneezes. In ''Yo-Kai Watch 2'', he can fused with Whisper to create .

:Katie is a girl in Nate's class at school. She is highly intelligent, but is worried that she does not meet her mother's standards, and is often admired by the male students, particularly Nate. She is the female protagonist in both the video games and the shoujo manga series. In contrast to Nate's Watch, Katie's Yo-Kai Watch is shaped like a pocket watch with a floral design, which Katie hangs around her neck. Outside of a dream Whisper has in episode 67, she does not possess a Yo-Kai Watch in the anime series and is unaware of the presence of Yo-Kai.

A sci-fi geek with an obsession with space, Inaho is tricked by Usapyon into buying the Yo-Kai Watch U Prototype, having believed it to be a "Space Watch", upon which she is introduced to the world of Yo-Kai. She agrees to help Usapyon build a rocket to help Dr. Purie's dreams come true, seeking out Yo-Kai Medals needed to power the individual parts.

:A Shady Tribe Yo-Kai from America, who brings Inaho into the world of Yo-Kai. Although he wears a rabbit-shaped astronaut suit, he is not actually a rabbit, as the rabbit ears are just part of his helmet; underneath the suit he looks nothing like a rabbit. Whenever Inaho pushes him too far, he activates his and starts firing his laser gun everywhere. In his past life, Usapyon was a supposed otter named , who was taken in by a rocket scientist named Dr. Hughley and poised to be the first small animal to survive going into space, only to be killed in a rocket malfunction he himself caused. Now as a Yo-Kai, Usapyon wants to make Dr. Hughley's dream a reality by making a new rocket powered by various Yo-Kai, seeking out Inaho's help in order to build it.
